Clay Unit: Coil Pots and Pinch Creatures

Students learned clay handbuilding techniques including coil and pinch. They started by creating formative coil snails, followed by coil bowls, and pinch creatures. They learned the importance of scoring and slipping clay to attach pieces, and the nature of glaze and using three coats.

Relief Printmaking

Students made two color relief prints with animals as subjects. They learned how to carve into styrofoam and how to anticipate where colors would print.

Squeegee Painting

This fun, one day project introduced students was a way to balance having control and the relinquishing of it.

Cardboard Sculptures

Students cut, painted, and assembled cardboard pieces in this abstract sculpture project. They were able to expiriment with cardboard joining techniques as well as bending and using corrugations as sculptural elements. We talked about using geometric and organic shapes as a starting point, and the challenge of not knowing exactly what you are making. One of the school's occupational therapists deemed this project "an OT's dream" as students used scissors to cut the challenging material. Stained Glass Inspired Frames
